For domestic hot water
Describe your normal routine: morning use, which outlets run together, and any bath or shower with a different demand. The number of fixtures shows the layout; flow and simultaneous use establish the actual load.
For storage equipment, consider tank capacity and recovery rate together. Stored water can cover a draw, but the heater then needs to replenish it. For instantaneous equipment, consider flow at the required temperature rise: colder incoming water changes how much can be heated.

For space heating
Room area, insulation, windows and outdoor conditions contribute to heat-loss calculations. Emitter type, operating temperature and zone controls also belong in the design. Counting hot-water taps does not establish the space-heating load.
Where one system serves both needs, the appliance and arrangement must support both duties, with appropriate controls and operating priorities. The word “boiler” alone does not establish that compatibility.
Mention future heating plans before purchase so the source, routes and expansion can be considered. Underfloor heating and radiators differ in installation and response.
Check the installation location
- Space for the unit and tank, with maintenance access.
- Pipe routes and distance to outlets.
- Available energy and compatibility with the model.
- Ventilation, flue and installation requirements in the appliance manual.
The survey checks these, particularly in an existing building with fixed pipework or restricted space.
Does cooling water mean I need a bigger heater?
Not necessarily. Note when it happens: another outlet opens, a long draw finishes, or from the start of use. Capacity is one possibility; settings, maintenance and connections can also be involved.
If the same usage used to be served comfortably, request maintenance before replacing the appliance. Symptoms help the technician but do not establish the cause without inspection.

The quotation should identify the model, duty, capacity or output and the demand used to select it. For combined hot water and heating, ask about the arrangement and controls, plus pipework, flue and commissioning scope.
